چکیده

We present some results and raise some issues regarding benchmarks for evaluating garbage collection in persistent distributed stores. We believe that such issues are relevant due to increasing research activity in this domain. Therefore, deening widely accepted benchmarks to evaluate the performance and impact of garbage collection solutions is urgent. Currently, the performance of garbage collectors is measured using synthetic, often unportable and/or controversial benchmarks, making the relative evaluation of each solution almost impossible. In addition, there is a lack of knowledge on the behavior of real applications, e.g., amount of garbage, rate of death, etc. This paper outlines our experience on benchmarking our prototypes. We also report what we think is relevant to measure and which missing information we would like to obtain.

PMOS: A Complete and Coarse-Grained Incremental Garbage Collector for Persistent Object Stores

Traditional garbage collection techniques designed for language systems operating over transient data do not readily migrate to a persistent context. The size, complexity, and permanence characteristics of a persistent object store mean that an automatic storage reclamation system, in addition to ensuring that all unreachable and only unreachable data is reclaimed, must also maintain store cons...

ارزیابی عملکرد ریوی گروهی از پاکبانان شهرداری استان فارس در سال 1391

Background: Garbage collectors form a large group of municipal workers who have occupational exposure to different airborne contaminants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the respiratory health of a group of garbage collectors who were working in Fars province. Methods: This cross-sectional study was undertaken among a group of 105 garbage collectors and 93 referrent individuals. Subjects...

Garbage Collecting Persistent Object Stores

Many techniques have been devised for garbage collecting main memory heaps for programming languages, and there has more recently been progress on distributed garbage collection, for sets of long-lived processes in distributed systems. Little attention has been paid to garbage collecting large persistent stores, however. A persistent store is essentially a shared heap that outlives the executio...

Back-Tracing over Distributed Persistent Storage Without Transactions

Orthogonally persistent automatic storage management provides a useful abstraction over stable secondary storage, in contrast to manual storage management which is complex, error-prone and tedious. The provision of the persistence abstraction over a cluster of storage nodes provides this abstraction in conjunction with mainframe-level aggregate IO performance, necessary for the support of high ...

A Comparative Evaluation of Parallel Garbage Collector Implementations

While uniprocessor garbage collection is relatively well understood, experience with collectors for large multiprocessor servers is limited and it is unknown which techniques best scale with large memories and large numbers of processors. In order to explore these issues we designed a modular garbage collection framework in the IBM Jalapeño Java virtual machine and implemented five different pa...
